Underestimated is a blend of Petite Sirah and Syrah, and will commonly referred to as a “Rhone Style” blend. Each variety is hand-harvested, fermented, and aged sur lie in barrels separately. After extended aging, the perfect blend and barrels are selected. The Syrah gives the fruit and aromatics (floral, berry driven nose), while the Petite Sirah gives color, body and tannin/concentration.
Santa Ynez Valley runs East-West with no mountain range blocking the valley from the Pacific Ocean, which enables the cool air and fog to penetrate the vineyard during the long summer days common to Santa Barbara. This is important because it allows for more even ripening and produces balanced flavors.
